Spread across nine islands around 1,500 km west of mainland Portugal, the terrain rarely stays the same for long. You move between ocean views, dense greenery and black volcanic rock, sometimes within a single ride.
The terrain is rarely flat for long. It rolls and rises in a steady rhythm, with short climbs, exposed sections and quieter inland roads that feel far removed from busier cycling destinations.
Each island has its own unique character:
- Flores feels the most remote, with steep green landscapes and dramatic coastal edges.
- Pico is more varied, combining farmland, lava fields and wide-open volcanic terrain shaped by past eruptions.
- Faial offers a striking contrast between its exposed western coastline and greener, more populated interior.
That mix of surfaces also works well for mountain biking, with many routes moving between tarmac, gravel and rougher volcanic tracks. What you notice most is space and quiet. The landscapes are largely untouched, and the riding tends to follow the shape of the land.
You don’t need to travel to experience that. These ROUVY routes let you explore the islands indoors first, getting a sense of how each one rides before deciding where you’d want to go in person.

Example routes from the Azores collection
These ROUVY routes lead you through parts of Flores, Pico, and Faial, each with a slightly different feel. You won’t find long alpine climbs here. Instead, the terrain rolls, rises, and eases in a way that keeps the ride varied.
Some routes stay close to the sea, others head inland through greenery or volcanic ground, but all of them follow the rhythm of the terrain and profile.
Interior Flores to Cedros - Flores Island
Starting inland in the central part of Flores Island, this route rolls gently through open pastureland before dropping into a long, fast descent toward the north coast. The road opens to wide Atlantic views as you pass above Santa Cruz das Flores, with sweeping bends, stone walls and exposed coastal sections. After a brief low point, the route changes character, climbing steadily back through lush, terraced greenery toward Cedros, where the gradient ramps up again to lead you to the finish.

Pico island to Cabeços do Mistério - Pico Island
Running from the south toward the north coast of Pico Island, the route starts with rolling volcanic terrain and a gentle inland rise before transitioning into a long, gradual descent. Midway, the landscape becomes more open and exposed, with rougher surfaces, low volcanic ridges, and wide views across the island as the road winds through sparsely vegetated terrain. The ride ends in the region of the Cabeços do Mistério, situated in the Prainha Forest Park of the nature reserve, formed during the longest volcanic eruption in the island's history.
