Ric Stern has been professionally coaching cyclists since 1997, using an evidence-based approach that focuses on the holistic needs of each athlete. As founder, director and senior coach at CycleCoach.com, he coaches all disciplines of cycling, from road and time trials to gravel, track, mountain biking, and ultra-endurance. He specializes in power-based training and has experience working with both able-bodied and non-able-bodied athletes.
Ric’s achievements include developing a ramp-based test for estimating functional threshold power (FTP), and creating training zones. He has coached numerous champions, from a 2011 elite men’s world champion in track endurance and Paralympic medalists, to riders competing in the Tour de France and two-time winners of The Transcontinental Race. With published peer-reviewed research and a deep commitment to continuous improvement, Ric himself is fitter and faster in his 50s than he was in his 20s!
ROUVY: To start, please introduce yourself and share your background in coaching, particularly your experience in designing training programmes like the Serious FTP Builder plan you created for ROUVY.
Ric Stern: I’ve been professionally coaching cyclists since 1998 and hold a BSc (Honours) First Class in Sports Science. I’m an ABCC [Association of British Cycling Coaches] Senior Cycle Coach with published, peer-reviewed research in endurance physiology. My coaching career has spanned elite athletes and high-performance riders, leading to achievements like World Championship gold medals, Commonwealth Games podiums, and Paralympic medals.
I’ve provided sports-science support at the Tour de France and coached athletes to two wins at The Transcontinental Race, along with numerous national championships and top finishes in pro races. Designing and implementing effective training plans like the Serious FTP Builder is a natural extension of my experience helping riders optimize their performance.
Benefits of Ric Stern’s Serious FTP Builder training plan
ROUVY: What is the primary goal of the Serious FTP Builder, and which type of cyclist would benefit the most from these workouts?
Ric Stern: The Serious FTP Builder plan aims to help advanced riders significantly boost their functional threshold power while building endurance and overall performance. It’s perfect for cyclists who want to gain a competitive edge, whether that’s staying with the pack, pushing the pace, or dominating group rides and races.
ROUVY: FTP is a crucial metric for many cyclists. Can you explain why improving it is so essential and how this plan addresses that?
Ric Stern: FTP is foundational in cycling because it dictates your ability to sustain high power outputs over time. A higher FTP makes the difference between being in the race and struggling to hang on.
This training plan focuses on structured intervals and endurance work to progressively build your FTP. Riders see improvements that allow them to sustain higher power over longer durations, giving them a competitive advantage in both racing and endurance rides.
