Weak core
Your body depends on your core and upper-back muscles to balance on the bike. But if they aren't doing their job, you might be overcompensating with smaller neck and shoulder muscles to hold the position. This leads to fatigue and pain, especially on longer rides.
How to prevent it: Add some basic core strength exercises into your workouts to prevent neck pain.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP: If you notice persistent neck pain, radiating tingling into your arms, or back pain that interferes with everyday activities, it's worth checking in with your health practitioner.
Hands and Wrists: Numb Isn't Normal
If your fingers routinely “fall asleep” halfway through a ride, that's not just part of cycling – it's usually a sign your hands are taking too much load. The classic version is cyclist's palsy or handlebar palsy: tingling or numbness in the ring and little finger from pressure on the ulnar nerve where it passes through the palm. Some riders instead notice symptoms more in the thumb and first two fingers, which can point toward median nerve compression and carpal tunnel-type issues.
Hand position and grip
Your hand position could be the culprit. Staying in one grip, especially if you're nervous and hold the bars with a death grip, keeps constant pressure on the same nerve areas.
How to prevent it: First, try to relax! And second, your best prevention is just to rotate through different hand positions. If you've got drop bars, you've got lots of places to hold – the tops, hoods, and drops, so you can mix it up.
Vibration and rough terrain
Rough terrain or long descents can increase vibration through the bars, which increases nerve irritation through the wrist and palm.
How to prevent it: Try to use well-padded gloves, and thicker bar tape or cushioned grips which can absorb shock or pressure. If that isn't enough, you might consider wider, tubeless tires which can add a lot more cush to your ride.
Bike fit and weight distribution
Again, poor bike fit can be the cause of all your woes. That low front end, long reach, or downward angled saddle can make you shift too much weight onto the bars and your wrists.
How to prevent it: Small changes to your bar height, reach, or saddle tilt (along with some core strengthening moves) can help you sit a little more upright and take that pressure off your hands.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP: If numbness or tingling lasts longer than a few minutes after a ride, starts to affect grip strength, or comes with pain in the forearm, it's worth speaking with your doctor rather than trying to figure it out on your own.
Saddle Pain and Chafing: The Problem No One Wants to Talk About
No one wants to say this out loud, but almost every regular rider has had a day ruined by saddle discomfort at some point: the chafing, the tenderness, and that unfathomable saddle sore make the idea of sitting on a bike again… extremely unappealing. The pain can range from minor irritation to severe.
Old or low-quality chamois and shorts
Your shorts are letting you down. If your chamois is old, or cheap, or you're trying to wear undies with your bike shorts, you're going to be uncomfortable.
How to prevent it: Just bite the bullet and invest in a good pair of bike shorts or bibs with thick padding. Retire those old ones, the ones that have gone thin (or are getting see-through), wrinkled, or feel rough against your skin. And for the love of all that is beautiful on the bike, leave those underwear at home.
Sweat and friction
No one wants to talk about sweaty bike shorts, not even me. But long rides in a sweaty kit can create just the right environment for chafing and skin breakdown, leading to dreaded saddle sores.
How to prevent it: Use chamois cream on any ride where you'll be sitting for more than an hour: it reduces friction, helps protect the skin, and can lower the risk of irritation turning into a true saddle sore.
Saddle width, shape and position
A saddle that's the wrong width, shape, or height can put too much pressure on soft tissue instead of your sit bones, making you constantly shuffle around, creating friction and chafing.
How to prevent it: Aim for a width that supports your sit bones, a shape that doesn't dig into soft tissue, and a position that lets you sit still rather than sliding forward or rocking side to side. Your local bike shop can help you pick just the right saddle, and many have loaners so you can test them out before you invest.
Off the bike, simple habits help too:
Get out of your kit as soon as you finish riding, shower with gentle soap, dry the area carefully, and let the skin breathe in loose clothing.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP: If you notice painful, raised bumps, broken skin, or soreness that persists after a couple of days off the bike, treat it as a medical issue rather than just cycling discomfort. Increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or red streaks are all reasons to see a doctor, as infected saddle sores sometimes need prescription treatment.
Don't just tough it out: unchecked saddle pressure can eventually cause real damage, including nerve entrapment, chronic soft-tissue swelling in women, and erectile dysfunction in men.
When Crashes Happen: Road Rash, Fractures and Head Injuries
I'll never forget that time I crashed at the velodrome at a breezy 24mph. I was surprisingly ok, just missing a good bit of skin on my knees and a huge chunk of pride. But hey, even careful riders go down sometimes. When you do, the most common injuries are usually road rash, bruises, and occasionally fractures. Knowing basic first-aid steps helps you make good decisions in those stressful few minutes after a crash.

Road Rash
My retired pro-cyclist friend likes to remind me that pavement doesn't care who you are – if you go down, it's going to take off your skin. If your skin is scraped but you're otherwise okay, move to a safe spot off the road.
What to do: Rinse the area gently with clean water or saline if you have it, and carefully remove dirt or grit to reduce the risk of infection later. Pat the wound dry with a clean cloth or gauze, apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if available, and cover with a non-stick dressing.
WHEN TO SEEK HELP: Seek medical help urgently if the wound is deep, won't stop bleeding, covers a large area, or shows signs of infection over the next day or two (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever).
Fractures
If you hit a pothole, go over your bars, or get hit by a vehicle, you're much more likely to break something in your fall. The most likely fractures are your collarbone, ribs, or your wrist if you put your hand out to catch your fall.
Pain, swelling, deformity, difficulty moving the limb, or not being able to use the arm or shoulder normally after a fall can all be signs of a fracture. You'll want to keep the injured area as still as possible while you call for help.
What to do: Do not try to “push” anything back into place yourself. Avoid moving the injured rider more than necessary, especially if there's any concern about neck, back, or head injury. Collarbone, rib, and wrist injuries are all reasons to stop riding immediately and get assessed in an emergency department, particularly if pain is severe or breathing is difficult.
Head Injuries and When It's an Emergency
Any loss of consciousness, even briefly, should be treated as potentially serious and warrants medical review. Worsening headache, confusion, repeated vomiting, trouble speaking, vision changes, or weakness in limbs are all red-flag symptoms: call emergency services rather than trying to ride or drive home.
There's no sense trying to look tough when your health is at stake.
Preventing Injuries and Crashes
You can't always prevent a crash, but you can be as prepared as possible.
A good fitting, well-maintained bike is the first step to preventing both overuse injuries and crashes. Mechanical issues can cause crashes, for example, if a tire blows out flying around a corner or your headset is loose on a descent (the death wobble is real).
Always wear a helmet, no matter how experienced you are. Even though a helmet cannot prevent every concussion or crash outcome, it can reduce the risk of serious head injury. Jumping into a tough training plan too quickly can cause fatigue and overuse injuries, muscle soreness, and pain. If you're new to training, coming back from an injury, or have been off the bike for a while, you'll want to load gradually and build up over time to prevent further injury.
