We will start on a flat segment of Iceland’s national Route 1 or the Ring Road and head southeast. You'll pedal through vast farmlands and rugged volcanic terrain, with distant mountains and volcanoes on the horizon, heading toward the iconic and spectacular Seljalandsfoss Waterfall as your destination.
Continuing on the Ring Road heading southwest, Jökul Glacier Lagoon marks the magnificent endpoint of this scenic route near Vatnajökull National Park in southeastern Iceland. The lagoon’s tranquil blue waters are dotted with icebergs, and ice chunks lie scattered on a black sand beach. Enjoy today’s flat stage, as you’ll need the strength and energy in your legs for the tough climb in the Stage 3.
Cycling westerly up to the Skálafellsjökull Glacier near Vatnajökull National Park involves conquering a tough 926-meter climb on a narrow gravel road with steep switchbacks and uneven terrain. As you ascend, the landscape shifts from rocky hillsides to snow-covered glacial moraines. Near the top, the brilliant white ice cap of Skálafellsjökull is vivid over the dark volcanic rock.
We will visit Höfn next. This coastal town on Iceland's Ring Road is set on the Hornið peninsula, with the ocean on one side and a glacier on the other. The harbour reflects the town's fishing heritage, while traditional houses and surrounding farmlands add a hint of civilisation. It is a flat ride where you can enjoy views of vast green fields, majestic mountains, and distant glacial views.
On the next stage of your tour, you'll hug Route 1's coastal road eastwards toward Djúpivogur, a fishing town in southeastern Iceland. Located on the Búlandshöfði peninsula at the base of the Eastfjords, the 16 km course offers slightly undulating terrain with dramatic mountains and scenic coastal views. Save something in your legs for the last challenging stage.
On the final leg of your journey, you’ll briefly follow the Jokla River before heading west and ascending 477 m toward Vopnafjarðarhreppur along the northeastern segment of the Ring Road. The route includes rugged terrain with rocky outcrops, expansive fields, and patches of moss and hardy vegetation, offering dramatic and vast vistas to finish off this fantastic tour!
