The cyclist's first aid kit: what to pack for road, gravel and long rides

The old adage, "Hope for the best, and be prepared for the worst," is a wise approach to packing for rides. Just as you would pack a raincoat if there's a chance of rain, you should carry a cycling first aid kit just in case you or someone in your group has an accident.

TL;DR
The cyclist's first aid kit: what to pack for road, gravel and long rides
Disinfecting and dressing road rash will allow you to finish a ride and give you the best chance of avoiding infection, especially if you have a few hours of riding left.

How to adjust your kit by riding style

Road
What to takeEssentials, or for shorter rides close to home, just your charged phone.
Why?Usually close to people and other traffic with phone signal available, so the priority is treating road rash and getting home.
Gravel / MTB
What to takeEssentials.
Why?Help may be further away and phone signal more likely to be poor, so the basics are required.
Bikepacking / Long-distance
What to takeAdd soap, an irrigation syringe, extra dressings and antiseptic wipes, blister care, water purification and medication. A splint and tourniquet are also useful if you know how to use them.
Why?Being self-sufficient for many hours or even multiple days on remote trips requires the ability to fully treat minor issues and manage more significant ones until help arrives.
Group rides / Ride leading
What to takeBasic first aid knowledge, including CPR, recovery positions and proper wound dressing. Essentials kit with spare wipes, dressings, plasters and gloves.
Why?Having at least one first-aid kit and someone with basic first-aid knowledge can help save a life in extreme situations and help comfort someone who has crashed.
